Betsy DeVos is Simply Unqualified

If you’re on this site, chances are you are deeply opposed to the philosophical positions of Betsy DeVos, nominee for Secretary of Education. This short missive is directed solely at her objective lack of any experience or education that would qualify her for the position. Call or write your U.S. Senators.

I am calling to ask you to vote against confirming Betsy DeVos as my Secretary of Education due to her lack of qualifications for the job.

Ms. DeVos has never attended a public school. She has never sent her children to a public school. She has never taught in any school. She has never been an administrator in any school. She has no experience with the student loan program. She has no professional qualifications related to education.

Worse, however, is her dismissive attitude towards the job. She was utterly unprepared for her job interview. When the Senate committee asked her about guns in school, it was clear she hadn’t thought about the question. When they asked about testing for growth vs. competency, she didn’t understand the question. When they asked about the civil rights of students with disabilities, she had no idea there was a federal statute addressing that. When they asked whether publicly-funded charter schools should be held to the same standards as public schools, her only answer was “I support accountability,” refusing to answer the question.

Betsy DeVos does not have enough respect for our schoolchildren and their parents to prepare properly for her job interview and is clearly ignorant of education policy questions and laws. It would be an insult to our children, their teachers and their parents to put her in charge of their education. Please withhold your consent for this appointment.

Thank you for your attention.
